Sustainable management of sediment in rivers is increasingly important from an economic, social and environmental perspective. There is also growing evidence that climate change will influence the sediment loads of rivers around the world.

Water and energy storage reservoirs are essential to regulate highly variable river flows as well as provide flexibility and stability to power systems. Without active management, the continual accumulation of sediments undermines the capacity of hydropower projects to deliver water and energy services in a sustainable way.
