INAUGURATION CEREMONY OF IRTCES (1984, CHINA)
The International Research and Training Center on Erosion and Sedimentation (hereinafter referred to as ”°the IRTCES”±) was jointly set up by the Government of China and UNESCO on July 21, 1984, in Beijing, China according to the resolution adopted at the 22nd Session of UNESCO's General Conference (1983, Paris). The Ministry of Water Resources is the governmental executive agency of China.
IRTCES aims at the promotion of international exchange of knowledge and cooperation in the studies of erosion and sedimentation problems. IRTCES provides technical services in sediment information exchange, training of sediment engineers and consultation on sediment management, erosion control and environmental and ecological protection of watersheds.
Since its founding, IRTCES has made significant contributions in research and training to solve scientific and engineering problems related to erosion and sedimentation, and has become one of the most important representatives of China as a partner of UNESCO. IRTCES has been able to contribute to the advancement of science in the field of erosion and sedimentation through the following activities:
Conducted research and training programs supported by UNESCO, IHP, UNDP, FAO, WMO, WB, ADB, as well as Brazil, Canada, Germany, Japan, Nepal, Pakistan, Thailand, the Netherlands, USA, and so on £¬ for example, UNDP/UNESCO-RAS/88/026 ”° Regional Training Program on Erosion and Sedimentation for Asia, UNDP/FAO/UNIDO-RAS/93/062”°Farmer Centered Agricultural Resource Management Program(FARM)”±, GCP/FAO-GCP/RAS/161/NET”°Participatory Integrated Watershed Management Training Program for Asia(PWMTA)”±.
Dr. Chun-hong Hu, Secretary General of IRTCES met scientists of Moscow Univ.

Has sponsored and co-sponsored 45 international and regional symposia and workshops attended by more than 6400 person-times scientists from 45 countries;
Has been serving as the permanent Secretariat of the International Symposia on River Sedimentation;

Organizing International Symposia Has been editing and published the International Journal of Sediment Research, which is the only English language journal that is devoted exclusively to the field of sediment research in the world;
Has been coordinating the research works for sediment management related to the Three Gorges Project in the Yangtze, Yellow, and Haihe Rivers ;
Has been the organizer of the National Information Network of Erosion and Sedimentation and the National Sediment Measurement and Research Team;
Has been the Editorial Office of China Gazette of River Sediment;
Has been the manager of Qian Ning Memorial Prize for Erosion and Sedimentation and has awarded for six times the prize to outstanding scientists and engineers.
Has established information exchange with 84 institutions and universities of 48 countries.

Organizing field study tour of International Training course on Soil Erosion and Its Control
IRTCES welcomes future cooperation and collaboration with sister organizations, including governmental and non-governmental bodies, research institutes, universities and consultants in sediment and erosion related fields all over the world to promote international development on erosion and sedimentation, sustainable utilization of natural resources and melioration of the ecological environment.
