Three months after the December 2004 tsunami, a new earthquake hit the Indian Ocean off the coast of Sumatra (Indonesia) on Monday 28 March. Measuring 8.7 on the Richter scale, this quake did not cause a tsunami, however a wave measuring three meters high did cause considerable damage on the island of Simeulue. This event underscores UNESCO¡äs push to implement a global tsunami alert system by 2007. (Source from UNESCO) |
