As the year 2011 draws to an end, we feel that we can look back on a successful year for WASER, and its Third Council would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continuing support for the Association and wish all members a happy and prosperous New Year for 2012.

During the year in 2011, there have been several important developments and achievements for the Association, including:
(1) As the official Journal of both IRTCES and WASER, the quality of the International Journal of Sediment Research (IJSR) has been further improved. The number and range of contributors have increased significantly.
?(2) WASER is continuing to grow and now has over 352 members. A further 1 new life member from China and 1 new member from USA joined the Association in 2011.
(3) WASER and IRTCES jointly sponsored the International Advanced Training Workshop on Water and Soil Conservation (Sept. 13) at IRTCES under the auspices of UNESCO in Beijing, China. Around thirty participants, from 12 developing countries were trained on issues from basic concepts on water and soil conservation and to practical knowledge on sustainable sediment management by top experts in the field.
(4) After hearing the news about the earthquake and tsunami which struck the Pacific coast of the northeastern region of Japan on March 11, a condolence letter signed by the President, Vice Presidents and SG of WASER was sent to all Japanese members of WASER. Prof. Hajime NAKAGAWA from Kyoto University of Japan wrote in his reply letter that in this time of hardship and sorrow the sympathy and assistance received from friends and colleagues overseas and from the international community (WASER) at large is of immeasurable value. He also said that with their kind help and support we, as a nation, will have the courage to recover and rebuild in the wake of this terrible disaster.
(5) WASER is one of the co-sponsors of the ¡°International Conference on the Status and Future of the World¡®s Large Rivers¡± held from 11-14 April 2011 in the Austria Center Vienna. More than 550 abstracts have been submitted to the conference. Out of these, 360 have been accepted for presentation. More than 400 participants were coming from 73 different nations from all over the world. The presentations covered all relevant conference topics as well as numerous rivers (from the Amazon to the Yangtze, from the Mississippi to the large Siberian Rivers). President of WASER, Prof. G. Di Silvio attended the conference and presented a short welcome greeting at the opening ceremony.
Looking to the future in 2012, WASER will co-sponsor the 4th International Conference on Estuaries and Coast from August 8-11, 2012 in Viet Nam, the 12th ISRS in Japan in 2013, the 35th IAHR Congress at Chengdu, Sichuan, November 2013 and other activities to be decided yet. WASER members are encouraged to participate in the above important events.?
The Officers and members of the Third Council of WASER will do their best to promote the development of the Association during 2012, but your support for our Association will be very important.
You are encouraged to visit the WASER web site (http://www.waser.cn)for new features such as News, Photos, Meeting Announcements and Information and much more. We also hope that members will send their news, photos, and announcements related to soil erosion and sedimentation to the Secretariat of WASER (E-mail to: liuxy@iwhr.com or waser_secretariat@yahoo.com.cn), so that they can be posted on the WASER website and shared with all our members.
The Officers and Third Council members of WASER would like to take this opportunity to express their sincere thanks to IRTCES for its very important support in hosting and sustaining the Secretariat of our Association over the past year. Also on behalf of the Director of IRTCES, Prof. Shangfu Kuang and Vice-Director Prof Chunhong Hu, we send to all members of WASER our best wishes for a happy and prosperous New Year.
